Marine Engine installation at Suffolk Yacht Harbour

At the beginning of July we were asked to diagnose an engine problem which was causing the customers starboard Yanmar engine to overheat, after engine trials there was no obvious indication as to the cause and we had to advise that it would be necessary to remove and strip the engine to find the answer. Once removed from the boat we found that the front crankshaft roller bearing had broken up and particles within the circulating oil had caused extensive damage to other engine internals.

The customer was concerned that he was going to be unable to use his boat for most of the summer. We were able to offer various options from which the customer chose to fit two new Yanmar 6LYA-STP 370hp engines which were available 'off the shelf' from the UK importers.

In order to remove the old engines it was necessary to strip them down en-situ so they could be craned out of a 23 inch companionway, subsequently we were required to partially dismantle the new engines in the workshop before returning them down the saloon companionway, where we had rebuild them on board the vessel before lowering them onto the engine bearers with the aid of a pourpose built 'A' frame and block and tackle.

During the sea trials the new Yanmar engines performed well and exceeded the customers expectations. We subsequently received a letter of thanks from the owner:

"Thanks to a great team for the fantastic service received during the recent engine problems on Atalanta. You gave me various options, a time scale and estimated cost for each, I was impressed that the engines were 'fired up' on the morning that you had specified and with their subsequent performance. I must also praise the way in which the engine compartment and other areas were cleaned after the engines were fitted. To sum up, it was a job well done, on time and on budget."
